HDX Kindle Fire First Impressions - CNETFrance

I took in hand for a few minutes Kindle Fire HDX before further testing. Here are my first impressions on the powers of the machine as a tool for digital reading.

I explained it a few days ago that the Kindle Fire HDX was perhaps more suitable for reading though the Kindle Fire HD, with performance increasing, some new features and a more efficient screen. Amazon gave me his last model that I have the heart net. Here are my first impressions.

Unpacking tablet

Unpacking is always a formality at Amazon with its system “unpack without getting upset.” The Amazon is easy to open one such model. So no need to leave his tools to remove the tablet from its packaging.

The Packaging is could not be more simple: always minimalist, with a quick guide to a page, the tablet under his protective film, and a location where there is USB / micro USB

cable used for charging and transferring content, and taken to connect the cable to charge the tablet sector.

The handling

The new look of the tablet is its effect automatically. Finish the look “without personality” of the Kindle Fire, it has a good look at it now. It is light in hand, a lightness that unfortunately disappears when you add the cover Origami, which we will see other qualities.

Without cover, the tablet is nice in hand, fine, and very well finished. Buttons placed at the rear disrupt taken over by cons. I indeed hard to find, and I was obliged to turn the tablet to locate. It is certainly a matter of habit, but in any case it is a little surprising. Another point a little disturbing: the fact beveled edges, it is not spontaneously how to connect the micro-usb plug, which is facing up

.

With Origami case, the tablet loses much of its lightness. Fortunately, the buttons are always available (as they do not fold completely back), the cover with integrated buttons too.

That said, the cover is a real treat. Rigid, fine, providing complete protection without interfering with your grip in hand, it is revolutionary in the successful use of magnets: in fact, the tablet arises in the case simply and also easily removed through a system of powerful magnets.

In use, I would not be surprised that the put and removed many times each day depending on their needs. Folding to create a very well thought out and stand which is very reassuring, all being very stable. Finally, she almost forgot, magnet on the back of the tablet.

Unfortunately, once closed in the back (required to use), volume buttons and start are no longer accessible. Even for fingers can not move under the cover easily. It is in any case an error amazing ergonomics Amazon.

Installation

Two cases are possible: either you buy the tablet from Amazon, and the tablet will be delivered ready to use with your Amazon account already installed. It only remains to configure the Wi-fi, and your content will be synchronized and available quickly.

In case you are offering, simply enter your username Amazon then configure the Wi-Fi If you do not have an Amazon account, you just need an email address, and a few minutes to get everything operational. In short, impossible to do more simple, consistent with the approach used systematically by Amazon.

screen Kindle Fire HDX

One is immediately charmed. Discover the Amazon carousel on a screen as bright and colorful leaves no one indifferent. The resolution is impressive, as most high-end tablets coming out right now, but the result is particularly pleasing to the eye.

As announced, the outdoor performance is also better, although I prefer of course a reading light for these circumstances. The tablet thus remains readable even in direct sunlight, provided to the backlight to 100%, which is done without your intervention with the new AutoFit.

Performance

The tablet is equipped with a 2.2 Ghz processor 4 core Snapdragon 800, and it feels instantly. Everything is fast, which is especially comfortable to access different applications, but does not change much in playback mode, at least in this first taken in hand.

For ebooks, one could doubt that it will not revolutionize the reading experience. For applications, again, no major change. By cons, for magazines, it provides additional comfort, the files are often quite heavy.

user interface

The first impression for me was excellent, thanks in large part to the screen that is the most impressive I’ve seen to date. Coupled to the processor power, and aesthetics we love or not at Carousel of Amazon content, it is immediately impressed by the fluidity of the proposed experiment. Everything is simple. Carousel, available just below applications and a tutorial that guides you to navigate early experience

Then everything is arranged logically. But the heart of this concept is the carousel under which you can find applications, and over which you will find the content categories. This simple system allows you to access in a very intuitive in its last open files, making it ideal for users looking for simplicity, but could totally put off those who do not like the presentation, not to mention those who like to customize their interface.

In

“read” mode

on the new tablet, reading is still a little more enjoyable thanks to the resolution and quality of the screen. But it does not revolutionize either experience for ebooks as much as I would have thought. The difference is most obvious in magazines where the screen is really worth presentations neat publishers.

Self-adjusting brightness and contrast is in my opinion a success. Using improved indoors and outdoors thanks to this dynamic contrast automatically optimizes the color of each pixel according to the ambient light, which makes it easier to view images, videos and text regardless of the lighting conditions.

The new “read display” works as well as other browsers such as Safari for example, or by using some chrome extensions. But the big green button has the advantage of being visible, and the result is rather pleasant.

Finally, a “do not disturb” is quite handy when you want to read quietly. It helps to remove notifications, and so not to be disturbed during your readings. This goes in the same direction as that proposed by Kit Kat Android 4.4, which removes the notification bar during playback.

Contents

If the test of Kindle content beyond the scope of these first impressions, it is still useful to recall that the supply of ebooks on the Kindle Fire HDX, as with any Kindle device is limited to one offer Kindle or almost. The competitors are not welcome on the Kindle ecosystem, which generates a lack of choice.

side of magazines, the offer seems currently very limited, and what applications newsreader, it remains to be seen if all the key applications of market are available. Apparently, the main are present, whether Flipboard, Pocket Pulse, Instapaper or to name a few.

In conclusion

more, faster, with a high end screen which gives a shot of old with previous models, the new Kindle Fire tablet HDX is appealing. With automatic adjustment of brightness and contrast, “read display” mode or the “do not disturb”, everything contributes to improve the reading experience.

All this must be confirmed by further testing, which will also get a clearer idea of ??what is perhaps the weakness of Kindle versus competition . offers a digital readout rather limited outside the catalog of ebooks home
