Amazon for September updated its Kindle Paperwhite, instead of proposing a new model. With this “simple” update, the Kindle Paperwhite is she still one of the best e-readers on the market? Here are my first impressions.
The handling
class=”c11″ As with all actors, the reading light is provided with the bare minimum. A leather case which allows to pause and resume from standby automatically reading light, as is clearly the trend was included with my test model, but it is not part of the package.
class=”c11″ We find the cardboard box ready to use Amazon, a micro-USB cable, a guide in the format “card”, and of course the reading light. That’s all you’ll find.
class=”c7″
class=”c11″ Aesthetically, nothing has changed compared to the previous version, except that the back gets the acronym Amazon Kindle instead of initials. Indeed no reason to change the recipe. The quality is excellent, and the rigor of minimalism: micro-USB port, and power button slightly prominent and therefore more easy to feel that on many competing e-readers .
class=”c7″
class=”c11″ This pleasant side has its limits, because it means there is more audio jack or expansion memory option, which is still 2 Go but only 1.25GB available for user reality. Ditto for the integrated light: it will go through the menu, Amazon has not created a dedicated button
.In class=”c11″
hands precisely the impression is very “premium”. Weight content, impeccable assembly, texture very soft and reassuring back (does not slip), but this material, like the rest of the reading light is sensitive to fingerprints. The feeling of strength that emerges from the hull, and materials contrast with some competitive models. In hand, it all feels the premium even before the ignition.
installation
class=”c11″ Amazon has done things. If the starter card is a model of minimalism (a drawing showing how to connect the cable), it’s because everything is fully explained, step by step, from the start reading light. The beginner will find it easily
.
class=”c11″ We start with the home screen Kindle, and the well-known logo, then continues with the choice of language. Then back to the logo, progress bar forward and a nice screen that praised the new Kindle, as Amazon knows so well.
class=”c7″
Then we move on to setting up Wi-Fi, and the velocity of the machine is then noticed. The keyboard responds as fast as that of a tablet. Once wi-fi set, the owners of a Kindle account no longer connect to the other are invited to create their account.
class=”c11″ It only remains to configure parental controls, then c is the tutorial end of installation, where menus and navigation explained step by step, and you are guided through some testing time to control the operation of the reading light. Guided experience is a model of its kind.
class=”c7″
class=”c11″ installation ends. Having myself a Kindle account, I was able to synchronize the device and retrieve ebooks within 2 minutes of my choice. For others,
the user guide in Kindle format, you will find beautifully designed, and lets you take advantage of all the resources of the device.class=”c9″
In the end, the installation only took a few minutes, taking hands tutorial included.
user interface
class=”c11″
No significant difference between the previous version and the new version of the Kindle Paperwhite, which remains in the same style as the previous version: the interface is very modern, clean and intuitive . But with the new processor increases performance by 25% and the most powerful new touch screen experience is still different between the two versions.
class=”c11″ Regarding the interface itself, there is always a bar for menus, and an additional bar is added below the playback mode. The two bars are then available, which is very convenient. To access the menus, a tap at the top of the screen and voila. It is well thought out, the rest of the screen is dedicated to turning the pages. Finally, at the bottom of screen, upward movement provides access to a progress bar, which allows access to the functionality “page break.”
class=”c7″
class=”c11″ Amazon has mastered the art of limiting the number of actions needed to achieve an action. So you can change the font or font size or margin or spacing in three actions. It is sometimes much more tedious in some competitors. In practice, it is very nice.
class=”c11″ Finally, cursors and other solutions in place, including that to change the brightness react instantly under the finger, without latency, and provide access to a closer experience a tablet as a reading light, which is a great progress.
class=”c11″ For the user, the downside is very user framed Kindle certainly impeccable experience. A bit like Apple in its sector, Amazon imposes its vision, and offers a unique experience at the cost of a very small freedom.
screen Kindle Paperwhite
I’ve read here and there that Carta screen Kindle Paperwhite was disappointing, providing little compared to the version Previous, the Pearl HD screen, and I am not of this opinion.
class=”c11″ resolution certainly has not changed, but the contrast is improved, as can also be seen on several comparative videos. Very dark gray and made up with black, and it changes a lot the visual experience, especially with the whiter than competitors background. This contrast obviously brings a lot to the readability.
class=”c7″
class=”c11″ If Carta coupled with impressive screen Regal technology, integrated lighting is also welcome. If the previous version was criticized for its lack of harmony, difficult to criticize the new integrated lighting the new version of the reading light.
The screen duo Carta, and integrated lighting Kindle gives at least in my case the best visual experience I have had with a reading light, just before the Kobo Aura and HD screen offers a higher resolution and a more powerful lighting, and a little colder.
New features
In this area, the reading light offers some interesting features, such as calculating the remaining time from the previous version already, based on your current reading speed, or the Smart Search, which has been improved, or new interactive vocabulary, which improves its vocabulary. X-Ray feature enrichment is always the game. So little new.
class=”c11″ Pending further testing, the first things that can be said is that the interactive vocabulary seems to be a nice feature. Selected words will actually add to a list, accessible from the home screen of the reading light, presented as a book.
class=”c11″ These words are found in a column, then a new popup menu appears with the “dictionary”, “employment”, “delete” and “word mastered”, as well as flashcards.
class=”c11″ I will come back when all this thorough test of reading light.
In conclusion
class=”c11″ Amazon surfs the approach that has made the success of the first Kindle Paperwhite, and uses the same recipes that have made it a success: simplicity and ergonomics. The Reader is a very successful, attractive and elegant object, but what impresses most is the speed / torque screen quality.
class=”c11″ Everything is fluid, fast and instant. This turns deep access to functionality, since responsiveness is impeccable, with a very precise touch screen on top of that. Once in Playback mode, the new contrast coupled with the new screen lighting impress.
class=”c11″ In terms of features and services, not revolution Kindle experience, which seems pretty much modeled on the previous version, although some new features like the “jump page “or interactive vocabulary which I will discuss in-depth test.
class=”c11″ This test will learn more about the strengths and weaknesses of the reading light. But it should not fundamentally change my opinion on the fact that the Kindle 2 Paperwhite is a success.
