Test: a week with the new Kindle Paperwhite - CNETFrance

Last week, the first contact with the Paperwhite Kindle 2 was particularly well, to discover a seemingly very accomplished reading light. What about after a week of use

The Kindle Paperwhite has impressed me during my first taken in hand, and I had not hidden so my favorite in the first few minutes of use. A week of use allows for a little more notice placed on the machine.

Appearance, finish and taking hands

class=”c7″ In terms of finishes, the reading light has only two small flaws in my opinion: the lack of a dedicated light button, a little more proposed Kobo only, and holding in hands can be a little slippery. But the build quality and finish was as in the first version of Amazon has changed the name on the back of the reading light for this second version. Perfect fit, no squeaks or crack, ultra-soft material for the fingers, it is flawless.

class=”c7″ Having used the first day reading light with leather case which had been lent to me, I find that the investment of 35 € needed to acquire the cover should be considered. This case of very good quality, called adjusted case, the cover encloses a very effective protection (and also very difficult to remove), gives a stunning look without weighing it down, and it provides full protection allows standby and output ensures automatic closure of the magnetic flap.

class=”c7″ Taking hands with this case is excellent, while the bare reading light, that really matter in a very nice touch is a bit slippery and less reassuring.

screen Kindle Paperwhite

class=”c7″ Confirmation also after a week of using the screen is a success, with a contrast that makes reading more comfortable with the new technology coupled with the Carta Regal technology the latter to avoid a too regular full refresh. At Amazon, it was simple: there is a choice between each page refresh or not …

.

class=”c7″ In any case, it works. In use, the screen is simply superb. Only the HD screen Kobo Aura HD is in my opinion a rival. The additional and highly visible contrast provided by the Carta screen provides difficult to put into words, but significant visual comfort.

class=”c6″

class=”c7″ The lighting is also very harmonious, as everyone agrees to see. In practice, the week partly rainy and gray helped me confirm the usefulness of this technology outside of reading at night, and with an appropriate adjustment can compensate for a weak natural light sometimes. The lighting of this new Paperwhite is certainly a success.

speed and performance

class=”c7″

The promise of a faster processor than 25% is required, and provides a very significant comfort, especially on the Kindle interface, well optimized.

class=”c7″ software torque / hardware performance provides a reading lamp that features a very smooth experience, and this speed makes all the more enjoyable to perform operations. In use, the responsiveness of the device makes a lot more to use the menus on other devices where the latency is too high. Zoom example is highly effective in spreading the fingers or together with a latency certainly higher than a tablet, but still very acceptable.

class=”c6″

class=”c7″ Browse the internet via the Kindle experimental browser is still a frustrating experience, to book the more adventurous. But one reading is not made for that.

user interface

class=”c7″ interface changes very little from that of the previous version, and the same advantages as it is quickly forgotten, which is a good thing, since reading light should avoid anything that disrupts attention. Many options are available to enrich the user experience without distracting reading. The fast processor and responsive touch screen bring even more value this interface.

class=”c7″ Let’s talk about a new feature called “Jump Pages.” A swipe from the bottom to the top of the screen shows the cursor, and a pop-up that covers a large part of the screen and displays the text of the selected pages.

class=”c6″

class=”c7″ Arguably these pages using the cursor, but with a flick of your finger. A tap next to the preview screen to return to the page you were reading. Looking for a piece of text or a specific page is greatly facilitated, all (and this is key) without leaving the page on which you are.

class=”c7″ If “jump pages” is not a feature that changes the user experience in depth, it stands out as one of those little extras that make handy Amazon strength in this area.

options, services and features

class=”c7″ start with looking smart. I use quite a few this kind of tool for my reading, but it works. The visual presentation is quite clear, easy to access the dictionary and wikipedia, and you can look in the book, the text or the Kindle Store.

class=”c7″ By cons, place additional options such as highlighting, adding notes, sharing, translation (provided by Bing Translator), opening the dictionary or error in this subcategory reporting seems a bad choice. And it takes 3 steps (touch, go to “more”, highlight and select the option from the list) to highlight the text, then it takes only 2 eg Sony (touch and highlight). Nothing too serious though.

class=”c6″

class=”c7″ then Let the interactive vocabulary. You can access the complete list of words, or by the book. The words are displayed in a simple interface, just click on it to access the typical Kindle screen in two tabs: one for English, one for the job, which allows to see the word in context. The flashcards that are found in the menu are actually a makeover of the previous function, with a nice little card that highlights the word and gives the opportunity to see the definition. It’s pretty well thought out, and quite useful in an educational setting, but to be honest, I was not impressed by the function.

Conclusion

Amazon class=”c7″ he made a flawless? The Reader is a very nice machine, well finished, fast, using the latest technology and with always good to take without either breaking innovations.

class=”c6″

class=”c7″ against by the full integration of new permitted by the purchase of GoodReads, but that is expected in a future update is missing. Some regret that some features are reserved for the U.S. market, such as the ability to download Kindle games. You could also say that his back is (slightly) sliding, or we would have liked even more new …

class=”c7″ But in reality, it is difficult to find fault with the Kindle Paperwhite. Proposed € 129, this is one of the best finished reading lights, the only screen fitted new generation of E-Ink, offering one of the best integrated lighting, an impressive fluidity with 25% more power to good use, some interesting innovations, and always an owner ecosystem as effective (but closed) to the user.
